Kitchen Experiments
June 28th, 2010Of my many hobbies, the thing I most enjoy doing for fun is trying out new recipes in the kitchen. The first thing I do is search through many popular websites for new recipe ideas that will utilize the ingredients I have on hand. If I don’t feel inspired from that search (which isn’t very likely—there are so many amazing cooking sites!) I will turn to one of my cookbooks. I am known for grabbing all the cookbooks at thrift stores and yard sales! Once I have my recipe picked out, I look on the internet for videos demonstrating any techniques that I’m not familiar with. For example, the first time I made onion rings, I watched a video showing the proper way to slice onions. Then, I pull out the ingredients and get to work. The flour starts flying, the sink piles up with dishes and utensils and if everything goes right, a delicious meal emerges in no time at all. While not everything that I make turns out right, I still enjoy experimenting, practicing, and getting more familiar with different recipes.
Table Top Fiesta!
June 25th, 2010The spicy aromas of cumin and meat simmering waft through the air. A steady clink, clink, clink, resounds as tomatoes and lettuce are chopped. The air is warmed from the oven that is heating tortillas. Soon, a scrumptious array begins to appear on the table. There is smooth sour cream, guacamole, salsa, shredded cheese, and freshly diced onions. There is a bowl over-flowing with browned taco meat and the tortillas are fanned upon a platter accented with whole chili peppers. It might sound like the set design for a television cooking show but it’s not; it’s what I recently had for dinner.

There Is No Recession For the Poor
June 22nd, 2010I am tired of hearing about the current recession. I am tired of all the “feel good” stories on the news about how rich people suddenly can’t afford to pay $3000 for their mortgage and $1000 for little Jimmy’s soccer uniform. Hey, rich people, guess what? This is how life is EVERYDAY for so many of us! I’m irritated that struggling is such a tragic buzzword now. So many people will likely spend their entire lives in this struggle. They will never “go back” to a time when they didn’t have to choose between dinner and electric. I think that the only recession related aspect that affects the poor is increased job competition. It used to be that you could always walk into a fast food joint, retail store, or theme park and get a job on the spot. Now, those bottom of the barrel jobs are being usurped by college graduates who are realizing that the world doesn’t need another Communications major.
Hamiltons and Tacos

Yesterday was my birthday. I was disappointed that I didn’t receive any birthday cards and because my excitement for the day was going grocery shopping. Today, I checked the mail and saw that my parents sent me a birthday card. Enclosed were two ten-dollar bills. What would I buy? I went home and turned on the radio. The host started talking about a new restaurant called Del Taco. Del Taco! I was so excited! One of my favorite bands sings about Del Taco in every other song. So compared to yesterday, today is going great! I received an unexpected gift of money and I’ll be able to use it to try out a place that I’ve been hearing about for years!
Flight of the wasps
June 14th, 2010When I was about six years old, I had a favorite outfit that I would wear several times per week. It was a mini, fire-engine red, sweat-suit. I am wearing this outfit in at least half of the pictures from that era in my life. Anyway, my siblings and I were at the playground one day, and I strolled past a wasps’ nest. I probably looked like a beautiful, bright red flower to those wasps, because I remember being stung and running for my life. In short, the experience was traumatic. Since then, I don’t often wear the color red; at the early age of six, my views on fashion were shaped for the rest of my life.
A place to call my own
June 11th, 2010When someone asks, if you could have anything in the world, what would it be?, a lot of things come to mind. Riches, possessions, world peace—the standard answers. While there are probably a lot of nobler choices out there, there is one thing that comes to mind first when I think about this question: a home of my own. I want a place with a yard for my children to play in. A place that is safe, light, cheery—a place where everyone wants to bring there friends. My home doesn’t have to be very large—it will be a comfortable size for its inhabitants. It will be a place where everyone can feel peaceful and where imaginations can blossom.

Comfort is key
June 8th, 2010Today was supposed to be a work day—I have no plans to go out or see anybody except for my family. Therefore, I dressed accordingly. Today I wore a pair of dark-blue jeans, a v-neck t-shirt with green and blue leaf patterns on it, and a pair of white socks. I didn’t even bother to put on shoes, because I probably won’t leave the house, except to take out the trash. I made sure not to wear something I care about too much, because I’m planning on cleaning the bathroom. In fact, when I do that I may even change into one of my husbands pairs of shorts, so that I don’t wreck my jeans. We’ll see.
Family: an ever-growing tree

This may seem cliché, but the most precious part of my life is my family. When I was young, “family” meant my my parents and siblings. They were there for me growing up, and they still are even as I have left the home and started a family of my own. Recently, I have had the chance to bond with some of my extended family. I have learned to love my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents to an even greater extent. They have kept me company when I was lonely, taken care of me, fed me, and loved me. When I was married, something exciting happened. I gained even more parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Family never stops growing, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings for us.
The best of times
June 2nd, 2010I like to look back on the time that my family would spend together when my brother, sister, and I were very young (all of us were under 10 years old). One of our favorite things to do during the summer was to visit the beach for a bonfire. Our favorite beach had ready-to-use fire pits, so all we needed to do was to bring our own supplies (wood, marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers). When we got there, my dad would light the fire while the rest of us played on the beach, looking for sand crabs and digging holes so big that we couldn’t climb out without some parental help. Then we would roast marshmallows to our hearts’ content, and go home with sticky hair and faces, sand leaking from our clothing into the car upholstery.
